As defined by the World Health Organization effective health promotions means community wide efforts and interventions that improve overall wellbeing and have the reach and effectiveness to impact the people in need.

Examples of interventions and settings where they can be effective include:

  • School and workplace mental health programs
  • Early childhood interventions
  • Social support and community engagement
  • Women empowerment
  • Anti-discrimination programs
  • Other interventions that address the social determinants of mental health

Providing adequate attention to one’s own physical and psychological wellness¹.

Self-Care can take many forms and everyone can build skills to sustain themselves. Some examples that you can implement into your daily life include:

  • Intentional movement: exercise, stretching, active breaks, etc.
  • Journaling
  • Meditation
  • Enjoying nature
  • Creating artwork
  • Doing a puzzle
  • Taking a nap
  • Asking for help with tasks
  • Setting boundaries

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are negative, usually traumatic, experiences between the ages of 1 and 17. ACEs can affect a person’s health throughout their lives. They may lead to mental health conditions, chronic physical health conditions, and/or substance use disorders.

Signs of ACEs can include:

  • Fear of people
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Bedwetting
  • Mood changes
  • Difficulty showing affection
  • Challenges learning in school
  • Avoid situations that relate to the event
